Why have a random facts page?
September, 2008
From 2002-2005, I worked for Stephen Nickell at the Bank of England. Every now and again he used to ask me, "Ryan, don't show me (economic) models, tell me some facts, something I don't know?" Well, back then there were few facts that I knew which Steve Nickell did not. However, since moving to the US I have been interested in cross-checking "common wisdom" of cross-country differences with actual data data. Cross-checking "common wisdom" about the PPP exchange rate and the income tax rates is the motivation for writing my fun papers, The real exchange rate for students and The tax rate for PhD students.
