In 2007 I started a Macro/International finance reading group
At the Bank of England, I was always impressed with the enthusiasm and presentation skills of visiting PhD students from the US. This influenced my decision to apply for PhD programmes in the US.
When I started the graduate program in economics at Maryland, I was disappointed with the lack of discussion between the students. I was also surprised about the lack of confidence/delivery when students presented their work.
How could I encourage more debate and discussion between the macro students and improve the average presentation skills of PhD students? I thought the idea of reading/discussion group would be a useful vehicle to do that.
I organised the reading group for a semester before the new junior professors at Maryland started their own. Here is a link to the presentations from that semester. You can also see how my webdesign skills have evolved!
