Brief Bio:
Professor Mahlon
Straszheim received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1966.
He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at
Harvard 1966-71 and joined Maryland’s faculty in 1971. He served as
chair of the Department from 1988-2005. His research interests are
urban economics, transportation economics, local labor markets, and regional
models of the State of Maryland and its sub-regions. Current research
focuses on the changing industry structure in the State and its principal
regions, regional growth patterns, and the role of agglomeration economies
in the State and major metropolitan areas nationwide.
He served as advisor to
Maryland Governors Schaefer and Glendening from 1992-1998 and has provided
quarterly economic forecasts of the Maryland economy to the Comptroller
since 1992. He has frequently appeared before committees of the
Maryland General Assembly as well as other public and private sector groups,
addressing topics on the State economy, tax revenues and tax policy, and
economic development policy. He currently is an adviser to Montgomery
County's Department of Economic Development. He teaches topics in
applied microeconomics and U.S. economic policy, a seminar in the University
Honors program, and in the Department’s principles sequence.
